About

Patrick Bettison is a multi instrumentalist and composer with a jazz background, mainly known for playing Electric Bass, Chromatic Harmonica and Keyboards. As a freelance musician he has performed in jazz clubs and festivals throughout Europe and the United States. He has a unique individual melodic style which is instantly recognizable. Patrick is a natural musician who quite obviously loves playing music.

As a composer he fuses jazz and world music with unconventional instrumentation and percussion to create unique and memorable soundscapes. If there are lyrics, however, then the songs are often rather silly.

Little Patchems

Patrick Bettison

I've had lot's of nicknames; Wood, Patch, Patchems, Skippy, The Boy, Big Stuff, Betty, Mighty White, Powder,... and my favorite, which is more of a title, The Fugitive from Paris. Although I was very little as a kid (as you can see in the artwork) Little Patchems refers to my little brother, Jay. Sadly I couldn't find a school photo of Jay.

This tune features my good friend Andy Hamill on Acoustic Bass. Both Andy and I were lucky enough to work with and be mentored by Bobby Wishart. Always brimming with enthusiasm, he was an amazing teacher and musician with a quirky sense of humor. One of the many wacky things I remember him doing was sending record albums he wanted to himself, periodically. He would address them "To Bobby, from a friend," in his un-mistakeable hand writing and send them off, all just to make his wife have a chuckle when they arrived in the mail. I could never express in words how much I appreciated all the things Bobby taught me, not that he would be interested in those kind of accolades. So I decided to dedicate a tune to him instead and have Andy Hamill play on it too, We're going to mail it to him anonymously. and address it "To Bobby from a Friend" using samples of his unique hand writing that we have...and photoshop. He will probably be on to us in a flash.

When PatriQ recorded the first track for the album that would later be known as The End of the Alphabet no one knew what to expect. He was an unknown who wondered onto the music scene in his signature white tank top and shades with an unnerving confidence that caught everyone off guard. No one starts their music career with an album like this, but PatriQ doesn't care about what everyone else does.

Rehearsing, playing live, touring, even practicing his instruments were all unnecessary for him. “Some people have to practice, but not me. I just am. When you become the music nothing can stop your genius from shining through,” PatriQ said as he tuned his maracas between takes. Musicians and sound engineers crowded the studio eager to watch this rare talent at work.

“It was amazing,” recording engineer, Bill The Shark Johnson, said. “He did everything in one take, making up the lyrics on the spot and playing all the instruments. All the while he was eating the biggest Cuban sandwich I'd ever seen. I still don't know where he got that thing.”

Patti Coco Puff, a local singer who came down to the studio to witness the magic in person, said, “I wish I could write lyrics like that. Man, he's got such a nimble mind. When he came up with that line from Jello, 'Jiggle around on the plate for me,' my knees got weak. I'd Jiggle around on the plate for PatriQ any day.”

When the original recordings were lost no one thought this album would ever see the light of day. PatriQ had disappeared from the music scene as mysteriously and quickly as he'd arrived leaving a gaping hole behind. Five years later those recordings where uncovered in the basement of the deceased business tycoon, Robert The Bulldog Prescott.

When asked about the recordings Robert's daughter said that her dad was a big music fan who was just trying to keep a little bit of history for himself. Thankfully the family decided to release the tracks so we can all relive that important moment in musical history.

The End of the Alphabet is an album so dynamic and profound that it is unmatched by even the most well-known artists. Add it to your music collection and become part the movement.

Bio

Eight year old Patrick was happily playing with his Planet Of The Apes action figures when he received an important phone call. It was an offer of a gig for the coming Friday. Although the money was good, Patrick was initially quite hesitant to accept the gig - he didn’t play any instruments, after all.
“Don’t worry” the caller reassured him, “you'll be on bass.” His confidence restored, Patrick wisely accepted the gig - it was only Wednesday, leaving him plenty of time to learn to play the bass. “What a great way to earn a living!” he thought. Unfortunately, the gig was cancelled and the next offer didn’t come for another eight years - and that gig didn’t pay anything, but it was good exposure.
At age eighteen, Patrick moved to Glasgow, Scotland (he’d grown up in Australia). He began playing jazz with multi-instrumentalist Bobby Wishart, who taught him pretty much everything he needed to know about music (it’s true). After spending eighteen months in Glasgow, he moved to London, freelancing playing jazz with many different musicians including, Tim Whitehead, Jim Mullen, Django Bates, Gary Husband and Acoustic Alchemy. After spending eight years in London (the eight years without a summer) Patrick moved to Tampa, Florida (it’s summer all the time there). While in Florida Patrick worked with Gumbi Ortiz, Manfredo Fest, Kenny Drew Jr. and Tom Carabasi, playing mostly  Brazilian and Cuban influenced jazz. During this time Patrick began recording and gigging on chromatic harmonica and piano. Luckily, most people didn't notice how bad he was on piano. Fortunately he has improved a lot since then.
Patrick returned to London for another five year stint and played with even more people, including Tim Garland, Nicolas Meier and Asaf Sirkis. This all starts to be a bit much, though, doesn't it? Basically, Patrick just likes playing about with musical stuff, and he thinks he's quite good at it. He is quite confident that he's got some unique and appealing sounds going on.
If you really want to know about Patrick's music, it's probably best to just listen to a couple of tunes or go to a gig. Or if you'd like to meet him, go to a gig. He's quite approachable, and he smiles a lot. He's currently living in St Petersburg, Florida and is playing with bossa nova artist Daniela Soledade.
Patrick didn’t write this short biography - honest.
